Highlights of 2023

UKAS Certification

We began the UKAS certification process for our Integrated Management Systems 14001, 9001, and 45001. As of August 2024, we are fully accredited for all three!

Carbon Literacy Training

Awarded the Gold standard for Carbon Literate organisations, we have successfully delivered Carbon Literacy training to nearly 500 professionals across the country.

Wellbeing Initiatives

Our newly formed wellbeing working group completed a dedicated office wellbeing space and achieved Mindful Employer status for two consecutive years.

Team Expansion

The WRM team grew by three staff members, adding valuable support across various departments.

Industry Leadership

Mark Richmond, our Technical Director, was voted lead of the ‘Food Waste’ working group by the Anaerobic Digestion and Biogas Association.

Carbon Management

  • Greenhouse Gas Emissions: We decreased our total greenhouse gas emissions by 10.5% from our baseline year.
  • Travel Emissions: Avoided 2,706 kgCO₂e through ultra-low carbon and active travel.
  • Client Impact: Helped clients avoid 1,732,280 tCO₂e through landfill circumvention.
  • Reduction Opportunities: Identified 64,633 tCO₂e of reduction opportunities through our carbon assessments.

 

Materials Management

  • Waste Recovery: Recovered 55% of our total waste and transformed it into new products.
  • Sustainable Purchases: 100% of our electrical equipment was purchased as second-hand or refurbished models.
  • Client Certifications: Achieved a 100% certification rate for all clients in End of Waste, PAS100, PAS110, ISO14001, ISO9001, ISO45001, and CMS.
  • Permitted Capacity: Assisted clients in applying for 1,818,500T of additional permitted waste processing capacity.

Energy Efficiency

  • Renewable Energy: Invested 100% of our payments for gas and electricity into a renewable energy provider.
  • Gas Consumption: Decreased our total gas consumption by 44.5% from our baseline year.
  • Low Carbon Support: Supported 202 Megawatts of low carbon energy through our permitting services, helping clients avoid 160,355 tCO₂e that would have been emitted through traditional energy generation methods.

 

People and Community

  • Workforce Retention: Retained 100% of our workforce and developed seven new roles, enabling staff progression.
  • Mental Health Training: Trained four mental health first aiders and held ten wellbeing sessions with the wider team.
  • Carbon Literacy: Trained nearly 500 professionals in Carbon Literacy and co-developed a workshop with Greener NHS and The Carbon Literacy Project to upskill a large proportion of the NHS workforce.
  • Funding Support: Supported and helped create sustainability funding applications totalling £3M.
