LYPFT – Waste Compliance Audit

Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (LYPFT) provides specialist mental health and learning disability services and operates from 19 sites across the Leeds and York region, of which the trust directly manages 6 sites.

The arrangements and responsibility for waste management at each of these sites varies significantly, and the trust approached WRM to undertake a duty of care and regulatory compliance audit to ensure that all legal compliance obligations were being discharged.

Following information on data pertaining to the management of each site and the waste streams arising at each location, WRM developed an audit protocol that considered all relevant waste legislation.  This included core obligations as expressed by the Controlled Waste Regulations (2011) as well as more specialist obligations that pertain to specialist or niche waste streams.  To add value to the audit, WRM also included other obligations, such as applicable Health and Safety requirements, which could be readily and jointly addressed during the work performed by WRM.

The work provided LYPFT with a clear understanding of legal compliance risks relating to their waste streams across the 19 sites.  Where risks or concerns were recorded, WRM provide clear mitigation of rectification actions that could be implemented to address or close out identified risks.  The 19 audits were collated into a single deliverable which was handed over to the client contact to embed within the organisations wider compliance and corporate risk management framework.
