FAQs

The T9 Exemption permits treating scrap metal through activities such as sorting, grading, shearing by manual feed, baling, crushing or cutting with hand-help equipment, under controlled conditions.

In 2025, the waste exemption is due to be revoked, meaning operators will now be required to apply for an Environmental Permit to continue operating.

If your business currently holds a T9 exemption, you will now need to apply for one of the Standard Rules or bespoke permits for the treatment of scrap metal. There is a 3 month transitionary period to apply for a permit.

An application pack will consist of a range of operational procedures, risk assessments, and specific management plans for mitigating and controlling key risks specific to the activity such as a Fire Prevention Plan.

At WRM, we have consented over 10 million tonnes of treatment capacity in the UK, with a 100% permit application approval rate.
