The Brief

Biomara, a company focused on the production of seaweed-derived products, sought to gain a comprehensive understanding of the environmental impact of their operations. They partnered with WRM to conduct a thorough Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of their products. The goal was to identify potential impacts from production activities and devise effective reduction strategies.

The Solution

WRM initiated the LCA by defining its scope, which included the selection of the model, the extent of the supply chain, and the impact categories. An inventory was then compiled, capturing elements such as emissions, energy requirements, and material flows for each process. While primary data was prioritised, secondary data was also used when necessary. This inventory data was then used to calculate the environmental impacts, resulting in a Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA). The LCIA quantified the impact at each stage of the production process and supply chain.

The Outcome

The results of the LCIA were analysed in the context of the initial goal and scope. This analysis identified significant issues and evaluated the completeness and sensitivity of the study. The rigorous procedure facilitated a deeper understanding of the environmental impact of Biomara’s seaweed-derived products. This insight paved the way for the development of effective strategies to reduce the environmental impact, thereby aligning Biomara’s operations with their commitment to sustainability. This case study serves as a testament to the pivotal role that a well-conducted LCA can play in driving environmental sustainability in production processes.

The Legacy

“BioMara has been thoroughly impressed with the professionalism and expertise demonstrated by WRM in conducting a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for our project. John, from WRM, was outstanding. His dedication and attention to detail ensured a comprehensive and insightful analysis that has greatly benefited the understanding of our environmental impact. The thoroughness and effectiveness of John’s research and investigations into the LCA contributors were particularly commendable. The report delivered by WRM was not only thorough but also well-structured and easy to understand, reflecting John’s commitment to quality and clarity. WRM’s engagement throughout the process was exemplary. John was always available to answer our queries and made sure to involve us in every step, making it a truly collaborative effort. This approach not only enriched the final report but also made the entire process a valuable learning experience for our team. We are so satisfied with the work done so far that we have already decided to continue our collaboration with WRM for further downstream LCA work. We look forward to building on this successful partnership and are confident that WRM’s ongoing contributions will be vital in helping us achieve our sustainability goals. Thank you, John, and the WRM team, for your exceptional support and for delivering beyond our expectations.” Jay Dignan, Biomara
