The UK code of practice for the sequestration of organic matter to land for the generation of voluntary carbon credits.

The Organic Carbon Code (OCC) is the quality assurance standard for the sequestration of organic matter to land for projects in the UK, and generates independently verified carbon units. The code has been created by industry experts and soil scientists, providing the only code of practice in the UK for carbon sequestration to soils.

The Organic Carbon Code promotes:

  • high standards of sustainable land management in line with the Code of Good Agricultural Practice including the application of organic wastes and treated materials;
  • scientifically sound organic carbon measurement protocols that enable consistent and rigorous measurement of carbon sequestration in soils;
  • integrity through independent quality assurance (validation);
  • project registration, issuance, tracking and retirement of carbon units.

The Organic Carbon Code is currently awaiting certification to international voluntary carbon credit market standards.
