Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT) has been nominated for the “Environmental Sustainability and Climate Action Award” as part of the British Medical Journal’s annual award programme.

The award nomination is for “Reducing use of Desflurane in Anaesthesia”. This intervention is part of LTHT’s Green Plan. WRM Sustainability have been working with LTHT to implement the plan.

The intervention in question has led to a significant reduction in annual carbon dioxide equivalent emissions (CO2e). In the Trust’s baseline year, anaesthetic gases created ~8,000 tCO2e. Following the work done by LTHT, in collaboration with WRM Sustainability, emissions in 2019-20 reduced by 52% to ~3,800 tCO2e.

WRM Sustainability service lead, Adam Newman, was interviewed in the April edition of the BMJ.

The BMJ Awards will be judged and awarded in October 2020.
