Waste & Recycling Overview
The waste management sector handles more than 200 million tonnes of waste every year from UK households. Since 1970 the carbon emissions from waste management have reduced by 70% to approximately 5% of national carbon emissions, driven by an increase to more than 4,000 waste treatment facilities and the removal of biowaste from landfill. Future policy provides opportunity to support further avoidance from landfill and managing waste as resources through circular economy principles.
